Pastor Stewart Whitaker’s beloved daughter Sophie is getting married in one week. There’s just one problem: Alan, her fiancé, is not a believer. This goes against everything Stewart believes about marriage. After unsuccessfully trying to convince Sophie to reconsider, Stewart enlists the help of the rest of the family in a carefully planned campaign to convert Alan before the wedding.
Hijinks ensue. Along the way, Alan discovers that this perfect Christian family is not so perfect after all — there are lots of uncomfortable truths being swept under the rug. Stewart’s marriage actually came apart a long time ago, but he and his wife have maintained the veneer of being married because he believes divorce is wrong. Nevertheless, his wife has begun discreetly seeing another man. Alan begins to experience doubts when he discovers that Sophie has known about these uncomfortable truths all along, but unthinkingly participates in sweeping them under the rug like everyone else.
Sophie’s frustration with her father boils over. Stewart must pick up the pieces of the mess he has made, and attempt to reconcile his beliefs with the many imperfect realities of his life. His broken marriage must finally come to light, which means stepping down as a pastor. However, he is able to finally accept Alan and give his blessing for the marriage.
